How to Determine Sprocket Pitch for Food‑Processing Conveyors
The sprocket pitch must exactly match the pitch of its mating conveyor chain. Mismatched pitch will cause tooth jumping, severe abrasion, excessive noise and even chain breakage. Below are four practical ways to confirm the correct pitch.
1. Read the marking printed on the chain (First‑choice method)
Most food‑grade conveyor chains have model numbers stamped on the side plates. You can get pitch directly from the chain model.
- Short‑pitch roller chain: 06B (9.525 mm), 08B (12.7 mm), 10A (15.875 mm), 12A (19.05 mm)
- Widely‑used double‑pitch food conveyor chain: C2040 (25.4 mm), C2050 (31.75 mm), C2060 (38.1 mm), C2080 (50.8 mm)
2. Physical measurement on‑site (if no clear marking)
Pitch refers to the center‑to‑center distance of two adjacent chain pins.
- Measure the distance across 10 consecutive pin centres.
- Divide total measured value by 10 to get the actual pitch.
Measuring multiple links reduces manual‑reading error. Do not measure only one single pitch.
3. Check old original sprocket
Read the model marking on the existing used sprocket, e.g. C2060‑18T. "C2060" stands for chain specification and pitch. If the old sprocket is heavily worn and unreadable, measure its tooth‑root circle diameter and compare with standard sprocket dimension tables.
4. Confirm with equipment manual or drawing
Check the conveyor machine drawing, BOM list or original equipment manual for chain part number, then find its corresponding pitch.
Important Reminders
Double‑pitch chain cannot pair with ordinary short‑pitch sprockets, even if their numerical pitch looks similar. Their tooth profiles are different.
For food‑line retrofitting or replacement, always confirm chain pitch first before ordering new sprockets. Wrong pitch will make the whole assembly unusable.
